Gar\u00e7on manqu\u00e9, r\u00eaveuse et f\u00e9ministe, Esther leur tient t\u00eate depuis des mois. Ces derniers lui font alors une proposition : \u00e9pouser Thomas d\u2019Orseuil ou devenir dame de compagnie de la Marquise de Ruissant, \u00e0 Paris. Pour la jeune femme, le choix est vite fait. Elle laisse donc Fabian, son meilleur ami et s\u2019installe dans l\u2019h\u00f4tel particulier de son employeur. Rapidement, Esther attise les convoitises et d\u00e9couvre que des organisations secr\u00e8tes sont responsables de plusieurs disparitions.


Esther de Galsac est une jeune femme fra\u00eeche et libre. Refusant en bloc sa condition de femme soumise ainsi que le mariage arrang\u00e9 que souhaitent ses parents, elle choisit de travailler comme dame de compagnie pour la Marquise de Ruisant. S\u2019ennuyant profond\u00e9ment, elle fait connaissance des hommes qui vivent \u00e0 la cour et fait tourner les t\u00eates.

Henri de Douaines est un vicomte qui jouit d\u2019une mauvaise r\u00e9putation. Sa rencontre avec Esther va faire jaser. Membre d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 secr\u00e8te, Henri va rallier Esther \u00e0 leur cause.

Quelle romance fabuleuse !

J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 happ\u00e9e par cette romance historique, une immersion extr\u00eamement r\u00e9elle et incroyablement vivante. Je me suis crue dans un film de cape et d\u2019\u00e9p\u00e9e.

Esther est une femme forte, f\u00e9ministe, qui refuse sa condition et le mariage arrang\u00e9 souhait\u00e9 par ses parents. L\u2019\u00e9chappatoire propos\u00e9, devenir dame de compagnie pour une marquise, lui offre un r\u00e9pit. Commence pour la jeune femme, la d\u00e9couverte de Paris, des rencontres masculines plus qu\u2019agr\u00e9ables et des complots tous plus vils les uns que les autres. Ne pouvant faire confiance \u00e0 personne, elle s\u2019attache tout de m\u00eame \u00e0 Henri de Douaines, un vicomte qui jouit d\u2019une mauvaise r\u00e9putation. S\u00e9duite, Esther a du mal \u00e0 lui r\u00e9sister. Elle retrouve \u00e9galement Ars\u00e8ne, son fr\u00e8re militaire et Fabian, son ami devenu lieutenant. Enr\u00f4l\u00e9e malgr\u00e9 elle dans une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 secr\u00e8te, elle d\u00e9couvre des complots r\u00e9gis par des kidnappings, des meurtres et des pratiques occultes.

J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9e par ce r\u00e9cit extr\u00eamement bien \u00e9crit. Un langage d\u2019\u00e9poque, des descriptions pr\u00e9cises et absolument immersives, un rythme narratif haletant, j\u2019ai tout de suite adh\u00e9r\u00e9.

J\u2019ai appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 de rencontrer des personnages travaill\u00e9s, r\u00e9alistes et frondeurs. Esther est tant\u00f4t forte, tant\u00f4t fragile \u00e0 certains \u00e9gards. Fabian m\u2019a conquise tr\u00e8s rapidement, et j\u2019ai longtemps esp\u00e9r\u00e9 le revoir. J\u2019ai eu plus de mal avec Henri, non pas qu\u2019il \u00e9tait mal \u00e9crit mais simplement parce que j\u2019\u00e9tais agac\u00e9e qu\u2019Esther lui accorde son attention\u2026 et bien plus. Les chapitres r\u00e9serv\u00e9s aux agissements des Masques sombres m\u2019ont fortement plu, et j\u2019\u00e9tais tr\u00e8s tendue en attendant le d\u00e9nouement !

L\u2019\u00e9criture de l\u2019auteure est parfaite. Elle m\u2019a conquise par une facilit\u00e9 de narration et une pr\u00e9cision d\u2019historienne. J\u2019ai eu l\u2019impression d\u2019y \u00eatre tant le r\u00e9cit \u00e9tait efficace. J\u2019ai aim\u00e9 cette retenue lors des sc\u00e8nes romantiques, comme l\u2019\u00e9tait les gens \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque. C\u2019\u00e9tait beau, fort. La fin m\u2019a serr\u00e9e le c\u0153ur, j\u2019esp\u00e8re un \u00e9pilogue qui, je le craint, n\u2019arrivera pas. Mais peu importe, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 ravie de faire connaissance avec tous ces personnages hauts en couleurs.
